Snowmobile rules

Snowmobiles may only be driven on well-snow-covered ground where neither the ground nor the vegetation is damaged. In certain areas, snowmobile traffic is regulated through snowmobile bans, particularly in the mountains. There, you may only drive along marked snowmobile trails.

Snowmobiling is not covered by the right of public access, so you do not have an inherent right to drive on someone else's land. As a snowmobile driver, you should primarily drive on marked snowmobile trails. Public snowmobile trails are usually managed by the County Administrative Board or the municipality. Some trails are maintained by snowmobile clubs or other organizations.

Even on snowmobile trails, you should drive carefully. If the snow cover is so thin or loose that the snowmobile comes into contact with the ground, it is considered bare-ground driving, which is not allowed.

Keep in mind that:

  • You must be 16 years old and have a driving certificate to drive a snowmobile unless you obtained a driver's license or tractor license before January 1, 2000.
  • As a foreign driver (within EES*), you have the right to drive a snowmobile in Sweden if you have that right in your homeland. If you can not demonstrate this or if you come from a country outside EES, your only option is to be included in a group within the tourist industry or to possess a Swedish driving licence. *EES-countries are member countries of the European Union as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
  • Use an approved helmet according to the regulations. Children under seven years old can use another suitable helmet.
  • The maximum permitted speed for snowmobiles is 70 km/h. In some places, local lower speed limits apply.

Check the terrain conditions where you plan to ride. And remember - always drive sober!
